Why Clean Bunker Gear?
  • Failure to keep your protective ensemble clean will increase your risk of death, burns, combustion and diseases.
  • Dirty gear is more likely to conduct heat and can potentially become flammable.
  • Reflective trim on gear may not be as visible when dirty.
  • Hazardous contaminants from incidents and accidents may be harmful to firefighters health.
  • Clean gear lasts longer. Contaminants not removed from your protective ensemble may be hazardous and shorten the life of your gear.
  • The NFPA 1851 Standard recommends annual Advanced Cleaning and Advanced Inspection of all Bunker Gear.
  • Chemicals encountered at a job will, over time, break down the protective properties of your gear.
